The Tanger Med port complex was constructed on a central artery of global shipping; over 200 vessels a day pass through the Straits of Gibraltar as they carry trade between Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. The Tangier-Med Phase I container terminal is owned and operated by APM Terminals in partnership with the Moroccan Akwa Group and was opened in July 2007. Primarily a transshipment hub, APM Terminals Tangier is today the leading container operator in the port of Tanger-Med which is projected to become the largest port in Africa.
